Hill Construction was the Prime Contractor for the Library and Science building at Ashley Hall. This facility is a multi-media learning center with state of the art learning tools and a library. Within this building we worked on a new Biology and Chemistry lab, each containing fully equipped lab stations. Along with these new classrooms, the third floor of Jenkins Hall, which is connected to the Library, was renovated to include a Physics lab, two additional lab-style classrooms that can be combined into one large lab if necessary, and a dark room. The students even have access to the roof where we constructed a roof garden/class room.
The work consisted of the construction of a new 19,700 sq. ft. Library and Science Center of three floors and a penthouse connected to the existing east end of Jenkins Hall. On the third floor of Jenkins Hall, 4,500 sq. ft. of space was renovated to science classrooms/labs.
Special considerations were taken into place as the Library and Science Center was built to be a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certified Building. This means that the building is built, designed, and will operate in an environmentally friendly manor. The location and time of the construction also added additional challenges. Construction took place on Ashley Hall’s campus in downtown Charleston. The campus is flush with Rutledge Avenue and always occupied by students and teachers. Hill employees worked on a tight schedule that allowed not only Ashley Hall to run without any interference, but also did not disrupt traffic on Rutledge Avenue and the surrounding streets.
